Naruto is an anime about ninjas. The main character is a young ninja named Naruto (obviously). It's a great series. It has action, comedy, a tiny bit of romance. All the young ninjas in Naruto are people to admire. They work hard to achieve their dreams and to protect their village. I love Naruto to pieces. *happy sigh*
As Naruto is a boys anime, most of the focus is on the boys in the series, not on the girls. Kurenai is one of the female ninjas in Naruto. And she's the only female sensei. Kurenai is the jonin instructor for Team 8, which consists of Hinata Hyuga, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame.
This costume was very difficult to make. Kurenai's dress is so weird! It looks easy, but it's actually very hard to make if you want to make it accurately! I wouldn't have minded buying the costume off of ebay, except that none of the costumes sold on ebay make the back of her dress accurately. *frowns* It took me a full weekend to create a workable pattern for her "bandage" dress.
The dress is made of a knit fabric, so it's machine washable and very comfortable to wear. I appliqued the black stripes onto each separate piece of her dress before I put the pieces together. That took hours! I used an invisible zipper under the left arm. This was the most complicated dress I've ever made. But once the base dress was completed, the rest of the costume was easy! I bought a fishnet shirt and added red binding to the collar. Then I bought a pair of white bike shorts, which were perfect for the costume. I also bought medical gauze to wrap around my wrists and forearms. The sandals started off as a pair of cheap sandals from Walmart that I covered with black fabric. I already owned the ninja headband.
I finished just in time for Fanime 2008!
